Spring Break fun! Events and activities in 宅男社区 & White Rock

Spring Break is almost here! And with two whole weeks off, there are lots of fun, family-friendly and free activities and events to enjoy! Here’s a roundup of some of the things happening in 宅男社区 and White Rock over the next few weeks!

  • Meet 宅男社区’s first responders and explore fire trucks, ambulances and police vehicles on select days! Learn from 宅男社区 Fire Service, 宅男社区 Police, Ambulance Paramedics of BC, BC Emergency Health Services and the Ministry of Children & Family Development about what you could be when you grow up, and participate in a scavenger hunt, obstacle course and interactive activities!
  •  Learn about 宅男社区’s hockey icons, view contemporary Indigenous art, dig into 宅男社区’s roots and take in the museum’s photo mural project. Kids can also have fun in the TD Explore Zone, which features a mini museum, snack shack, small library, scarf cannon and treehouse with a giant slide!

  • Join staff at Totest Aleng Indigenous Learning House (13723 Crescent Rd.) for free fun for the whole family! Each day has a theme: Tuesdays, Turtle Island teachings; Wednesdays, weaving teachings; Thursdays, plant walks and colouring; and Fridays, button making and colouring.
  • Volunteer in parks with other youth to help restore, enhance and grow 宅男社区’s urban forest! The SYSS is always looking for volunteers to help remove invasive plants, plant trees and shrubs, clean up litter and enhance habitat within 宅男社区 parks.
  • Enjoy a heartwarming and poetic all ages theatrical performance following Edward Tulane, a vain porcelain rabbit who learns the true meaning of love. Onstage at 宅男社区 Civic Theatres (13750 88 Ave.), the venue is hosting four performances, including a sensory-friendly performance on March 14 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for each show range from $23.25 to $38.25.
  • Come to Hazelnut Meadows Community Park (14069 68th Ave.) to plant smaller forest trees and shrubs! Everyone is welcome and tools and training are provided. Wear sturdy, close-toed shoes and dress to get dirty. Plantings take place rain or shine but may be cancelled in high winds.
  • Naughty bunnies are on the loose at Historic Stewart Farm! Join the scavenger hunt, find the bunnies and receive a plush bunny of your very own! Held daily from noon to 4 p.m., prizes available while supplies last.
  • Visit Guildford Recreation Centre on March 20, noon to 2 p.m., or Newton Recreation Centre on March 24, 1 to 3 p.m. for a sensory friendly swimming experience. During these times, the pool facilities will see reduced noise, with no background music or speaker announcements, and additional considerations to create a supportive sensory environment.
  • Spring has almost sprung! And the Newton Seniors Centre (13775 70 Ave.) is hosting a free, family-friendly morning of Easter fun, including an egg hunt, hands-on crafts, egg painting and cookie decorating. Come meet the Easter Bunny and join the fun!
  • Help remove invasive plants at Fraser Heights Park (10588 160th St.) to enhance the local habitat! All ages are welcome and tools and training are provided. Dress for the weather and bring water. Look for the 宅男社区 Parks tents upon arrival!

  • Head to the Cloverdale Branch (55642 176A St.) for family folding fun! We provide the papers, you provide the ideas. For children six and up.
  • Spend your Monday afternoons playing DND with your Dungeon Master librarian! Bring your own Level 1 character or use a pre-made character provided by the library. For teens ages 12 to 18, held March 16 and 23 at the Ocean Park Branch (12854 17 Ave.) and March 17 and 24 at the Semiahmoo Branch (1815 152 St.)
  • Join us in Port Kells (18885 88 Ave.) for Minecraft-themed arts and crafts! Supplies will be provided, for children ages 6 to 12.
  • Learn from children’s comic artist Janice Liu in her step-by-step Manga drawing class! Hosted at the Fleetwood Branch (15996 84 Ave.). Space is limited, email library-teens@surrey.ca to register.
  • March 18 & 19 – Beachcombing:Presented in partnership with Parks Canada, learn about local sea life, plastic pollution on B.C. shores, and how to explore beaches safely and respectfully. For children ages five to 12.
  • Join your local library for playtime with board games, LEGO and more! Open to children of all ages and their caregivers. Hosted March 18 and 25 at the Newton Branch (13795 70 Ave.), March 19 at the Clayton Branch (7155 187A St.) and March 26 at the Fleetwood Branch.
  • Grade 6 and 7 students, make candy sushi and turn nori into animal shapes! All supplies provided, hosted at the Guildford Branch (15106 105 Ave.). Registration required, register in person or by phone starting March 4.
  • Back by popular demand, choose from a variety of designs for a unique phone grip or make your own! Supplies and snacks provided, for teens ages 12 to 18, hosted at the City Centre Branch (10350 University Dr.).
  • Come to the Guildford Branch to play a selection of board games – pick an old favourite or try something new! For teens 12 to 18.
  • Join Parks Canada at the Strawberry Hill Branch (7399 122 St.) to learn about animals that use echolocation – from little brown bats to killer whales! For children ages six to 10. Registration required, register in person or call 604-501-5836.
  • Get your groove on at the City Centre Branch for an hour of K-pop! For children of all ages and their caregivers.
  • March 20 & 26 – Pollinator Pals:For children ages five to 12, learn about local wildflower and pollinator species with Parks Canada.
  •  Can’t get enough of flowers? Come to the Newton Branch to make your own perler bead flower to take home! For children ages seven to 12, siblings welcome with a caregiver.
  • March 24 – Kids STEAM Club:There are several STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) events for children under 12 over Spring Break! Click the links below for details age groups, registration and more:
  • Join the Fleetwood Branch for a spring-themed program with games, activities and crafts! For children five and up.
  • Come check out a library on wheels! The Mobile Library will be stopping at 14225 Green Timbers Way, with more than 1,000 items to borrow!
  • Learn the art of storytelling at the Ocean Park Branch. Share your five-minute stories or a long joke and learn how to tell them better. For children ages eight to 12.
  • Jump into a good book and have a friendly discussion with our kids age 10 to 12! This month, the Strawberry Hill Branch is exploring The Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell.
  • At the Fleetwood Branch, join Sabina Khan to build confidence in your writing and turn a messy draft into a compelling story! Explore brainstorming techniques, story structure and editing strategies.
  • March 27 – Animal Aware:In partnership with Parks Canada, learn how to identify bears, coyotes, cougars and wolves – and how to avoid problems and stay safe if you see one! Registration required, click links for details:
  • Hear Canadian veteran Doug Loney talk about Canada’s contribution to World War II in a special presentation at the Guildford Branch. For teens ages 12 to 18. Registration preferred, register in person or call 604-598-7360 or email library-teens@surreys.ca.
  • Test your teen trivia knowledge! For Grade 8 to 12 students at the Clayton Community Centre. This program is part of the Late Night Youth Drop-In. A free Youth Services Membership is required to participate. Registration required, register in person or call 236-598-3072 or email library-teens@surrey.ca.

  • Wahoo! Come play Nintendo games such as Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Mario Party and more! Ages 7 and up recommended, children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult. First come, first served.
  • Introduce kids to the love of books with storytime! Children and caregivers will enjoy interactive stories, songs, rhymes and more. See website listings for times and further details.
  • Love LEGO? We provide the LEGO, you bring your imagination! Come play, experiment and create. LEGO Club is a fun afternoon program for all.
  • Drop in and create art at the White Rock Library! Supplies are provided. A parent or caregiver must accompany children under 10.
  • Calling chess players of all ages – those who want to learn, improve their skills, meet other chess players, or just have fun! Young children must be accompanied by a caregiver.
  • Come watch writers, poets, storytellers and performers in a free, family-friendly open mic night where each participant receives six minutes (360 seconds). For info, contact leah@leahmurray.ca.
  • Join us for an afternoon of music with fellow uke enthusiasts. All skill levels are welcome! Just bring your ukulele and singing voice for a great time. Don’t own a ukulele? Borrow one from at FVRL.
  • Join us this Spring Break to explore our Playground. Cubetto and Code & Go Robot Mouse teach kids basic coding through hands-on play. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a caregiver.
  •  Are you ready to play smarter? This high-energy show unpacks the fascinating science behind your favourite sports. Discover how we use science to perfect our game by exploring concepts like energy, forces and health.

  • There’s something going on almost every day at the Newton Youth Hub! Try your luck in the shamrock hunt, join a learning circle or sign up for the Mount Seymour tubing trip!
  • City Centre has tons of activities too! Take part in a cultural cooking class, join the discussion in the guys group and girls group, pick up a cue at the pool tournament or finish off Spring Break by pulling that reverse card in the UNO tournament! Open to all youth ages 13 to 18.
